Acupuncture for Lower Back Pain and Pinched Nerve in London

Acupuncture

Liu’s Chinese Medicine Clinic treats lower back pain and trapped-nerve pain with acupuncture at the Light Centre in Belgravia, minutes from Victoria, and in most cases you are assessed and treated in the same first appointment. Acupuncture cannot decompress a disc or un-pinch a nerve, but a large part of what makes a pinched nerve or a bad back so painful is the muscle spasm and guarding around it, and that is what needles release well. Sessions are £100 for sixty minutes, with £20 off your first visit.

Can acupuncture help a pinched nerve in the lower back? Yes, for the pain, by releasing the muscle spasm the trapped nerve triggers and calming the pain signal. It does not move the disc or bone causing the compression, and back pain with red-flag symptoms needs a GP first.

Common causes: muscular strain, pinched nerve, disc, and posture

Lower back pain usually comes from one of a few sources: simple muscular strain, a pinched or irritated nerve, disc-related problems, or the steady postural load of desk work. You know the trigger even if you cannot name the cause: it is often the jolt of standing up from your chair after a long stretch at the screen, or that first guarded movement getting out of bed. Most everyday back pain is mechanical and muscular, which is the kind acupuncture helps most. A pinched nerve adds a layer of muscle spasm on top, and that spasm is treatable even when the underlying compression is not.

When to see a GP first: red flags

Get urgent medical help, not acupuncture, if you have numbness around the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, or new weakness in the legs. These can signal cauda equina syndrome, a surgical emergency. Also see your GP first for back pain that follows a serious fall, comes with fever, or comes with unexplained weight loss. Practitioner Liu, who qualified as a doctor in China before training in Traditional Chinese Medicine, screens for exactly these signs before any treatment, which is the point of bringing back pain to a clinic with medical grounding rather than guessing.

How acupuncture relieves lower back pain and nerve compression pain

Needles placed into the muscles of the lower back and buttock release spasm and guarding, prompt the release of the body’s own painkilling chemicals, improve blood flow to the tight muscle, and calm the pain signal. The honest framing is that acupuncture treats the muscular and pain-perception side of the problem, not the disc itself. For many people that is enough to move, sleep, and function while the back settles, which is often most of what they came for.

There is also a practical point that stops some people booking when they should not let it: if lying flat on your front is too painful, which is common with an acute pinched nerve or a flared disc, you can be assessed and treated lying comfortably on your side. You do not have to be able to lie face-down to be treated.

Acupuncture points and what a treatment involves

The points follow your particular pattern. Commonly used ones include Shenshu (BL23) and Dachangshu (BL25) either side of the lower spine, points in the buttock, and a point behind the knee. The needles go into muscle, with a dull, heavy ache rather than a sharp jab, and they are nowhere near the spinal cord. For a stubborn, knotted lower back, we often combine acupuncture with cupping for back and muscle pain, which can help the muscle release faster.

Sessions, timeline, and when to combine with cupping

Most people need a short course of four to six sessions, with many easing within the first two or three. Acute strains often respond faster than back pain that has been there for years. Where the muscle is especially tight and ropey, cupping alongside acupuncture can speed that release, and we will suggest it only if it genuinely fits your back.

Is acupuncture safe for a slipped disc?

Generally yes, because it targets the surrounding muscle rather than the disc, and the needles do not go near the spinal cord. What it will not do is repair the disc, and we will not claim otherwise. We screen first, and if your signs point to something that needs a scan or a specialist, we tell you and send you back to your GP rather than treating around it.

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first visit covers a consultation, a red-flag screen, an assessment, and, in most cases, treatment in the same appointment, side-lying if that is more comfortable. Needles are sterile and single-use.

Frequently asked questions

Does acupuncture work for lower back pain?

For the common muscular and mechanical kind, it is one of the more useful things to try, easing spasm and pain so you can move. It is not a guaranteed fix and works better for some causes than others.

It can ease the muscle spasm and pain a pinched nerve triggers, though it cannot un-pinch the nerve itself. That relief is often enough to function while the nerve settles

Usually a short course of four to six, with many people easing within the first two or three. Acute strains tend to respond faster than long-standing pain.

Generally yes. It targets the surrounding muscle, not the disc, and the needles stay well away from the spinal cord. It does not repair the disc, and we screen for anything that needs a specialist first.
